They are moody creatures, but it isn’t all their fault. As boys enter their teens, they go through many physical changes, and it affects the way they think and their behavior. Just because they love you one day and hate you the next is no reason to make them suffer; they grow out of it eventually. Older kids seem to spend a lot of time in their bedrooms. What they get up to when they slam to door behind them is uncertain; perhaps it’s best not to know. Ignorance is bliss, as they say. Would you like to give your child the ultimate room where that can relax, work, and have fun? There are some brilliant ideas here that will make them happy; for a while at least. Yes, they will paint the walls black again when you aren't looking, but you have to make the effort.
Elevate The Bed
If you are handy with DIY, you can create a raised platform for a bed. It will free up a significant area of floorspace that they can use for other things. Here’s how to construct the platform.
- 1. Make a rectangular frame. Use 10cm x 5cm timber or the nearest standard size suppliers such as Alsford Timber has in stock. Cut each piece to length and join them with long screws and wood glue.
- 2. Cut two vertical posts to size. One end of the bed will fix to the wall, and the posts will support the other end.
- 3. You will need several; helpers to assist your while you raise the platform and fix it to the wall using hefty screws. It might be wise to use sturdy metal brackets there.
- 4. Mount the posts to the other end and secure them to the floor with small metal brackets and screws.
- 5. Use MDF or chipboard sheets to complete the platform.
- 6. Build steps to the bed for access and some safety rails to stop the falling out.
The area under the bed is just the right size for a sofa or a desk; they need
somewhere to study and complete their homework.
Fitted Furniture
Hire a carpenter to come in and build some fitted furniture. It is by far the best way to make use of limited space if the room is small. The bespoke design could accommodate all of their clothes and entertainment systems neatly. It makes the room look tidy.
Floor Design
Laminate flooring is without a doubt the best product for a teenager’s bedroom. They aren’t the most house proud creatures in the world, and it is a shame to waste expensive carpet on them. They tend to knock drinks over and leave food lying around the place. You need a surface that you can sweep and mop clean quickly.
Lighting Design
I suggest that you leave the central light fitting in situ for this design. Install a dimmer switch so they can set it to their chosen levels. You may notice that as their mood changes, so does the level of light in the room.
Of course, you must buy them the latest game consoles and computer so that they can engage with their peers twenty-four hours a day. If you don’t, their social life will suffer, and it will be ALL
YOUR FAULT!
