Home Improvement

After a long winter, you might notice that your home isn't in the best condition. Wind, snow, and rain can cause damage to your house, and you might have neglected some aspects of home maintenance during the colder months. But once spring arrives, it's the perfect time to start cleaning and mending to sort everything out for the summer. There could be a number of problems to address, from cracked gutters to air leaks in your windows. Doing just a few quick tasks could ensure that any damage to your home over winter doesn't lead to further problems down the line.

Seal Windows and Doors

Before the spring rains have a chance to start seeping in through any exposed parts of your windows and doors, make sure they're well sealed. You want to stop any water or drafts leaking in around the edges, which could result in cold spots and unwanted moisture. Check the caulking around your windows to see if it needs replacing, and if it does, remove the old stuff and apply new caulking to replace it.

Check Your Gutters

You need your gutters to function well to stop flooding and water buildup around your home. The autumn and winter can put a lot of strain on them, filling them with leaves and snow, and battering them with storms. When spring arrives, it's important to check them so you know that they're ready to handle the April showers coming your way. Give them a good clean out to get rid of any blockages, and survey them for any cracks or breaks. Repair or replace any broken parts.

Examine the Roof

Winter storms can loosen the shingles on your roof, which can lead to leaks and water damage. From the ground, survey your rooftop to see if anything is loose or broken. If any repairs are necessary, hire a roofing contractor to carry them out. Check your roof from inside too, looking out for any water or air leaks in the attic. You can visit the waterdamageminneapolis.net website to see what you can do about water damage if you notice that any has occurred over the winter.

Inspect Concrete

If you have concrete slabs outside, take a look at them to check for cracks or looseness. You can temporarily fill cracks with silicone caulk or concrete crack filler. Once the weather is warm and dry enough, you should power wash the slabs and seal them so that water drains away from the house.

Clean Out the Air Conditioner

Before you switch the air conditioner on for the first time, get a heating and cooling contractor to come out to your home and clean out the system. It's better to have someone come and service the unit once a year because cleaning it will mean it functions better. If it works better, it will last longer because there'll be less strain on it.

Spring is the perfect time to spruce up your home, when you might have some damage from winter to prepare. As well as fixing up some minor damages, you can take the opportunity to clean the house thoroughly from top to bottom.
